"Century" 100-mile paddle: Key Largo to Key West

10-days, 9-nights ~ March 13-22, 2012

Our annual KL2KW is the bucket-list trip of a lifetime. Imagine the sense of accomplishment paddling 100 miles to the southernmost point in the US! The 2012 "Century" trip, March 13-22, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Henry Flagler's Railroad. We'll stop at historic sites and paddle beneath many of the marvelous and beautiful bridges.

Along the way, we'll explore hidden mangrove creeks, work on stroke refinement and stop on islands to lunch, rest and swim. Each night we'll set up camp in time for a delicious dinner, often featuring fresh Florida seafood, and watch the famous Keys sunsets. As time allows, there will be opportunities to fish, snorkel, and birdwatch, so feel free to bring your gear.

Difficulty: This is a strenuous trip, for experienced paddlers able to kayak 10-17 miles per day, and set up camp each night. We have single and tandem sea kayaks, a good option if one person is less experienced. There will be a rest day at the half-way point for sightseeing, relaxing poolside and massages.

At trip's end, March 22, we recommend the Southernmost Guesthouse, right across the street from our landing in Key West. Customers should make pre/post lodging reservations as soon as they've booked the KL2KW.

Lower Keys Backcountry

2-4 nights, 7-9 miles each day

South of the Seven Mile Bridge, a maze of mangrove islands unreachable by road spreads out and away from civilization. This is the Lower Keys Backcountry, a watery wilderness covering more than 200,000 acres. A string of uninhabited islands mark a boundary between the Backcountry and the Gulf of Mexico. Join us as we leave the highway sounds of US 1 behind and delve into a world where fish school through shallow flats and stingrays lay silent at the bottom of turquoise blue channels.

We offer small group backcountry trips ranging from 3 to 5 days. The camping is primitive and the views sublime. There's plenty of time to explore winding creeks and shallow coves, snorkel or fish. The 5-day trip is a once-in-a-lifetime traverse of the entire Lower Keys Backcountry expedition. Contact us to discuss which option fits your group's goals and abilities.

Cost: $525-875 per person, all-inclusive, kayaks, camping gear, meals, & camping fees. 20% discount for bringing own kayak & camping gear.

Seven Mile Bridge Crossing

2-days, 1-night, 7 miles/day

Watch Video
Experience this engineering marvel as never before on this easy overnight camping trip. The Seven Mile Bridge spans a Caribbean-blue stretch of open water between Marathon and the Lower Keys. Originally built to carry Henry Flagler's East Coast Railroad, the modern highway bridge now carries cars to and from Key West (and cameos in Hollywood movies, as in the blockbuster "True Lies".) Never too far from civilization, this trip is a great introduction to kayak camping for couples or families.

Explore and lunch on Pigeon Key, an island museum that housed bridge construction workers. Evening finds us watching egrets and ibis fish in the flats off our island campsite. As the sun sets, we'll see the distant lights of the evening commute across the bridge. New in 2012: Sunset and Full Moon trips.

Cost: $350 per person all-inclusive, kayaks, camping gear & meals.
